Thirty-six military teens representing Active Duty, Guard and Reserve components from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia explored the campus of NC State University, for the inaugural “Wolfpack Leadership & College Tour” held 23-26 June 2015. Teens experienced first hand what it is really like to live on a college campus. They visited classrooms, toured campus along with state-of-the-art facilities, visited with college students… to get the real facts, met with college professors, lived in the dorm, and ate in the cafeteria. Most importantly, they met other military teens who are also preparing for college.

This orientation to college life offered experiential learning activities on topics such as finding funds to help pay for college, developing winning application essays, and balancing your budget. Teens were presented time management strategies to help them figure out how to succeed academically while enjoying the social opportunities available at a large college campus. An important aspect of college is developing leadership skills to stand out from the crowd. Military teens worked to gain skills and knowledge to help them prepare for the leadership opportunities that will come their way.

Teens enjoyed NC State’s famous Howling Cow Ice Cream, painting the Free Expression Tunnel, visited the state-of-the-art James B. Hunt, Jr. Library (complete with “book-bot” demonstration), group photo in front of Carter-Finley Stadium, and for their closing dinner…a delicious Southern-style dinner compliments of the State Farmer’s Market Restaurant.

Throughout the week, teens worked on their group presentations, which were presented on their last day of their “college experience”. Groups had the option of utilizing traditional PowerPoint, Prezi or video. Each group captured a diverse and informative perspective of their experience on the “Wolfpack Leadership & College Experience” week.
