  • Inbound (IB) defines an opportunity for a family to host a delegate during the summer months for the International Exchange Program.
  • Host families must have a sibling of the same gender and within 2-3 years of age of the visiting delegate.

Host Family Frequently Asked Questions

2024 AYP Program

Academic Year Program

  • The Academic Year-long Program (AYP) is an opportunity for 4-H families to host a delegate age 15-18 from Japan or South Korea for an entire school year (August through June).
  • Host families are not required to have children the same age as the delegate.
  • The delegate must attend a local high school (can be public or private, but private schools must be willing to waive tuition fees).
  • Delegates cannot be homeschooled, but can be hosted by homeschool families!
  • Host families must be able to provide a bedroom (can be shared with one sibling of the same gender and similar age) and three meals a day.
  • This is a volunteer-based program; host families will not receive a stipend. However, delegates do have their own spending money for personal expenses.
  • Specific criteria must be met by the host family and the local high school for a successful placement.

Outbound Application Information

North Carolina application deadline:  November 15, 2023

  • The Outbound (OB)  Programs are an opportunity for an active 4-H member in North Carolina to apply for a spot on the national delegations to Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Costa Rica, Argentina, or Norway (even years only). Applicants must meet specific criteria for placement on the state and national consideration lists.
  • Must meet specific guidelines and processes for 4-H delegate placement on the state and
    national consideration lists.
  • Age Requirements:
    • Japan 4-week & Taiwan  – 12-18 years old.
    • South Korea – 12 – 17 years old.
    • Japan 8 – week, Costa Rica, Argentina, and Norway  – 15-18 years old
    • Please note: the Argentina program DOES NOT include a homestay experience with a host family.
    • Applications for Outbound  2024 will be on November 15, 2023.
