The Plant Toolbox is a treasure trove of information, with an extensive database of plants that are grown in North Carolina. Explore this database to find native plants that attract a diverse range of wildlife, from butterflies to birds.
Quick tips to search for native plants that attract wildlife
Extension Gardener Plant Toolbox
- Go to plants.ces.ncsu.edu
- Select “Find a Plant“,(second from the left on the top toolbar). The green highlight button in the middle section of the image above allows you to switch between the botanical and common names.
- In the left column,under the heading “Landscape” select “Landscape Theme,” and from the drop down menue select “Native Garden,” and then “Attracts”. From the drop down menu select the wildlife that you want in your landscape. The number behind the type of wildlife is the number of plants that match this criteria. For example, 352 native plants in the Toolbox attract bees.
You can select multiple criteria. For example, you could select “Landscape Theme” “Native Garden”, “Attracts” and in the drop down menu select “Pollinators”, and then explore plants that bloom in various seasons so you can provide pollinators with nectar and pollen through out the growing season. Go down to the heading “Flowers” and select “Flower Bloom Time” then choose between the season in the drop down menu, or select multiple seasons to identify plants with long bloom periods.
